USC new #1

Posted by Jerry Burns on September 2, 2008

The AP poll and coaches poll came out today, and revealed to little surprise of nobody, that USC is now the no. 1 team in the nation, dropping Georgia down to the second spot.  No. 9 Clemson has dropped completely out of the standings after Saturday nights lost to Alabama.  Illinois is no. 24 after losing to Missouri on Saturday night.  They are the only top 25 team to lose their opener and remain ranked.

Bears captains named

Posted by Jerry Burns on September 2, 2008

The Bears have picked who will be wearing the ‘C’s on their uniforms for the 2008 NFL campaign.  Kyle Orton on Olin Kruetz will be the captains of the offense, while Brian Urlacher and Mike Brown will be the defensive captains.  Pat Mannelly will be captain of the special teams (the longsnapper).

It will be interesting to see how many of the captains will actually be on the field throughtout the year, seeing Kyle Orton is by no means a definite starter and Mike Brown is long term injury prone.

NCAAF - Week 1 Thoughts

Posted by Jerry Burns on September 1, 2008

The first week of college football is always an interesting one, because your never really sure what to expect.  Some of what you see will foreshadow what will come during the season, while other moments were mere glips on the college football radar.  This past weekend certainly offers up some interesting theories on whats to come this season.

Georgia over Georgia Southern

For a team that is ranked no. 1, and is considered to be one of the best defenses in the league, they sure gave up a lot of points to Georgia Southern.  I understand that it is the first game of the year, and with a victory in hand, coaches like to play kids lower on the depth chart to give them some field time, but Georgia Southern should not have scored more than six, instead they leave the stadium with 21.  With the injury to starting defensive tackle Jeff Owens, that could be potentially season ending, I would be a little concern Coach Richt.

Michigan loses back-to-back season openers

Boise St, Hawaii, Rutgers, South Florida.  These are a few of the surprise teams that have been emerging through the last couple of years, making strong runs for BCS bids.  Many people believe that this year that team could be Utah.  So far they are proving those people correct as they took down Michigan at Michigan.  Meanwhile Michigan and new coach Rich Rodriguez have alot to prove especially with the newly installed spread offense.

Clemson fails

Many people thought that Clemson vs Alabama would be the game of the week for week 1 football.  Afterall this was suppose to be Clemson and Bowdens chance to show that they were for real, and would not crack under the pressure of a high profile game, while it was Nick Saban and Alabamas chance to show that they were ready to once again enter the national championship picture.  The game not only went to Alabama, but they ripped it out of Clemsons hands.  Clemson has alot of improving to do, while Alabama is ready to once again shine in the national spotlight.

Auburn’s season over?

While Auburn absolutley dominated L.A. Monroe, they suffered some heavy losses early in the season.  Losing three wide recievers and one quarterback, it will be interesting to see how Auburn is able to respond to the rest of the season, especially when LSU comes to town in just a few weeks.

USC is scary good

USC is always a national champion contender heading into the season, but after this week there is little doubt that they are the early on favorite to win it all.  They outscored their ACC opponent Virgina 52-7.  As Mark Sanchez not only made it known that he will be the QB for the Trojans, but that he will contend for the Heisman as well.  The biggest part of the game for the Trojans was that no reciever or running back scored more than one touchdown despite the 52 points put on the board by USC.  That means Sanchez has a lot of talent to spread the ball around to.
